Soberania Birding Day Trip

Soberania is one of the world’s top birding destinations, with 525 species identified here. This park is just 45 min outside of Panama City, which makes it perfect for a day trip. The famous Pipeline Road is an open dirt road that goes 17.5 km into the park. There’s no need to walk to whole road to begin checking species off your list, just an hour at a slow pace will yield a surprising number of species! We often spot Trogon, Parrots, Herons, Toucan, Flycatchers, Hawks, Parakeets, hummingbirds, kingfishers, Jacana, Cotinga, pigeons, anhinga, cormorant and more.

We can also stop by the private Canopy Tower. It goes up above land, offering fantastic views and the chance to see canopy birds such as Toucans, Honeycreepers, Cotinga, Parrots and other species that are hard to see on the ground. There is an additional fee to climb the tower. If you wish to include a stop here, we go early, before it gets busy. Then we go to the Pipeline Road.

I share a spotting scope, bird books and binocular with my beginning birders. Experienced birders usually bright their own equipment such as binoculars and cameras.
